It occurred to me belatedly that Aaron Watson isn't exactly the best-known singer out there, unless you're already into Texas country music. Sometimes I forget how many of y'all are still stuck with access to little but Nashville's trash. Without the proper background, it could be hard to recognize Friday's song as a spoof, quote aside.
So today I bring you regular Aaron Watson. The Aaron Watson with a fiddle and pedal steel (which is how you know he's not from Nashville--I don't think anyone there these days would recognize a pedal steel if they tripped over it).
Two songs, neither of them particularly new. First one, "San Angelo". I've said before, and will again, that country music's strong point is how well it does slow, sad songs. This is a great example of that, a traditional lost love song somehow made a little better by who's singing it:
Next, a faster song. Had to do a little digging around, not because he's got so few but just because it's a bitch to find a decent live cut of anything on YouTube (I actually couldn't go with my first choice here because of that). This song is called "Reckless", and while the subject matter isn't exactly Earth-shattering or original, again he manages to make it something better than it otherwise would be, and I love the instrumentation on this one:
Now if you will excuse me, I'm back to YouTube to find more music for Marie before she beats me up. She was not happy with me when this song ended and I didn't immediately play her another one.

I pointed out to a friend on Facebook that the claims of Obama supporting marriage equality are absolute bullshit. I've posted about this before, back in '08. The President's much-ballyhooed "evolution" on the topic has finally pulled him up roughly level with Dick Cheney, but for some reason there are still lots of people who believe that voting for Obama is a vote for marriage equality, when he's out there on the campaign trail saying shit like this:
I'd say it's amazing how lip service is enough for some people, but the President has plainly given up all pretense of even that.
Naturally, bring up reality to a liberal and watch the goal posts get moved. This time it was someone else chiming in about the glories of Obamacare. Seems she's saving money left and right. It's been nothing but a good thing for her.
Great. I'm glad. Really. After all, she's upper-middle-class, and isn't that whom Obama pledged to help?
Oh, it's not? He promised it would help poor people, didn't he? Interestingly enough, it's not the lower-middle-class or the poor people on my Facebook who are singing Obama's praises...it's people who didn't need help to begin with.
Imagine that. Guantanamo Bay is still open, our presence in Afghanistan has been carried forward for the foreseeable future, warrantless wiretapping continues apace, teh gayz still can't get married, and poor people are still poor (only, now lots of 'em are even more tied to the government, and therefore with less chance to ever get ahead in life).
Yep, definitely a road worth staying on.
During a live interview today inside the White House, President Obama told MTV viewers that when it comes to same-sex marriage, it would be up to future generations of Americans to implement meaningful reform.
Asked if he would use his second term as a platform to extend same-sex marriage to more states, the president demurred, saying he viewed it as an issue for the states to decide.
"For us to try to legislate federally into this area is probably the wrong way to go," Obama told MTV presenter Sway Calloway, who asked questions submitted by youth voters.

The ticker over there to the left is accurate. I am nearly a week past due, with no real signs of impending anything.
Well, that's not strictly true. Over the past three days, I've had periods, several-hours-long, of regular, timeable, fairly intense contractions, that abruptly stop. Without a baby. Add into that several people thinking they're being clever by bugging me about having the baby, and it's getting more and more tempting to do it in total secret and tell no one until a week later.
Annoying a woman into labor doesn't work, folks. It also doesn't bode well for her to not lock the doors and refuse to let anyone in the house, including her husband if he's accompanied by anyone's relatives. (He'd understand. I think.)
Introverts, how do they work?

Here's a picture from our Sunday drive:

Taken, obviously, through the windshield, thus the bugs and such. This was on the drive from Helotes to Bandera (though we turned off toward Boerne before hitting Bandera). It was supposed to be a short jaunt to pass a bit of time.
Moral of the story? Let the man who studies map books for fun do the navigating.

I'm having trouble being in the proper frame of mind for Veterans Day. I know a good many, of course, and would like to tell myself I appreciate them on every day.
I mean, I put up with my brother, don't I? (I jest; this is here only 'cause I know he reads my blog.)
Of course, certain liberal Facebook friends have managed to include the President in their "thanks veterans" posts today. Why do I keep them around? It's like a train wreck, that's why.
Anyhow, thanks, guys. And gals. You know who you are.

'Tis Marie's birthday today. We celebrated it on Halloween, because I was thinking I'd have a newborn by now. Shows what I get for thinking. She cares naught for today. The important day to her was the one where she got toys. Typical toddler; also, she is way more into toys than her sisters were at her age.

I hate it when I don't know what to say about something. So go to JayG's blog and get the low-down on the fundraiser going on for Tam. I am never really sure whether it's okay to tell someone who professes no particular faith that you're praying for them, but at this point it's all I've got. I'll get to the money when I can.

As though we needed another example of the idiocy of Britain's gun laws

SAS war hero jailed after 'betrayal'.
Short version:
\In 2007, after providing training to the Iraqi army, Sgt Nightengale was presented with a 9mm Glock by Iraqis, and planned to give it to his regiment as a war trophy. Before he could do so, two of his friends died and he accompanied their bodies home and helped with funeral arrangements.
During his absence, his possessions--including the pistol that is illegal at home--were packed by colleagues and sent home. Again, this is 2007. Apparently, he never got around to unpacking things.
In 2010, while Sgt. Nightengale was in Afghanistan, his housemate's estranged wife made a claim of domestic violence against her husband, not Sgt. Nightengale. The house was raided by officials and at that point the gun--still packed away and untouched by anyone for three fucking years--was found.
In a display of utter brilliance, Sgt. Nightengale was court-martialed and on Saturday sentenced to 18 months in prison as part of a plea deal which could have brought only probation.
No one claims he had the weapon for illicit purposes. Due to a brain injury accompanied by memory loss--also not disputed by the court--there's every possibility he honestly didn't know he had the gun. He's been in the military for 17 years of "exemplary service". And now he's going to prison and his wife and kids are going to lose their house.
There's really nothing I can say to point out the idiocy any more clearly.

I present to you a local band, Emory Quinn, performing the Verve Pipe's "Freshmen":
I will confess that even after the first time I heard this (on KFWR, natch), I was not convinced it really existed. Heard it again tonight, managed to catch the band name, and hunted for it on YouTube. Someone likes it well enough to have put it up.
It is...different. I'm fairly certain this song should never sound upbeat.
Update: Erik points out to me that maybe not everyone is familiar with mid-90s alt.rock. Well, that's your shortcoming, not mine, but I will help you out by providing you with the original version:
